Project Pinterest: DIY Cake Stand

Oh. My.
Do I ever love cake stands!
...the designs...the colors...the shapes...
But the price of them...not so much.

My budget for cake stands is about $5.00 per year.
Which means I can either afford one made of cardboard or make my own.

...I hate tough decisions...

We have a brand spakin' new Salvation Army store fairly close to us and, as it happens to be my all time favorite thrift store, I spent part of my free morning there.
It was gianormous! And wonderful!
And everything with a green tag was 50% off!!!
{eeek! Can you feel my excitement!?}

After not very long I found a candlestick and large platter. {costs are below}
When I got home I glued them together with Gorilla Epoxy.
{I have no idea where I originally saw the idea to glue a candlestick and plate together, but HERE is a pretty fab and super easy tutorial if you need one.}

And then I hemmed and hawed over what color to paint it all.
{had the candlestick not been discolored I may have left it as it was}
White? No, too bland.
Blue? No, I just painted that Cheese Grater Earring Holder blue.
Mint Green? Aaahhhh yeah! We have a winner!
{except I couldn't find mint green, so I settled for green apple}

I do want to point out that this paint is not food safe!
{if you know of a spray paint that IS food safe, please leave the brand name in the comments...'cause I haven't been able to find one.}
So my plan is to either use this stand for prepackaged foods {such as in the picture}, a display for birthday goodie bags, or if I'm using it with homemade treats I'll put a piece of parchment down...which also means I won't have to wash it....because I'm pretty sure it's not water resistant, either!

My costs were as follows...
Candlestick - $1.75
Large Platter - $1.00
Rust-Oleum Spray Paint in Green Apple - Smooth Satin Finish - $3.90 {I had a 40% off coupon}

Grand Total: $6.65
{So, ok...I exceeded my $5 budget. But I do have at least half the can of spray paint left}

What project did you finish recently?!

  2. It is so pretty! I really liked it, and I will sure make one and share this idea with a friend of mine who bakes delicious cakes and sells them. She will love this!

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Love it... and now I'm pondering food safe paint. Hmm...

  4. It's beautiful Kate...but even prettier before the paint went on it...I love the way it looked then. No intention to offend at all...you know if the candlestick was pewter or silver it can/could have been cleaned with some baking soda and water mixture. Just an FYI...lol

  5. Nancy - not offended in the least. The candlestick still had the original tag from Walmart on it, so we can all rest assured that it was neither pewter nor silver! ;) (the discoloring looked like it had been caused by wax) And thanks for the baking soda and water tip!

  6. Okay, here is an alternative to the wax/parchment paper: What if you cut a circle the same size as the plate out of an oil cloth piece of fabric? You know, the kind that they make tablecloths and stuff out of. You can find a neat coordinating pattern to accent the new style of the cake platter. Since it is normally used as a table cloth fabric, it won't really slip and slide around, plus you can just wipe/wash it off when the pastry is done. There has been a huge popularity in that fabric again, so finding a funky cool print shouldn't be a problem. Since you just need the size of the plate it will be really cheap, too. The last little bonus is that you could change the look of the cake stand (make it fancier looking or more modern looking) with just a quick change of fabric. Great for the different holidays too, like Easter, Christmas, St. Patrick's...all of them would be able to use this color easily.
    Just my little suggestion. :)

  8. I love the color and the shape of the candle stick. You could always just set another dish on top so you can use it for food.
