R by Barn - B&W

I've decided that I officially suck at converting photos into black and white. They are all so flat and never POP and generally don't really look very good.

What am I doing wrong?!
Don't worry about sugar coating it - just give it to me straight.
Thanks.

  1. Those are pretty darned cute kids! I have no advice on the B&W other than to play with the contrast levels? Sorry!

  2. Love the B and W of your little girl and the red and orange of your little man.
As for B and W and making them pop for me my point and shot took THE BEST B and W ever. I now have a Nikon D5000 and the B and W are not coming out like I was acustom to with the point and shot. While in Picasa I would try taking the SOOC photo and do the B and W button and then go to tuning and push the shadow button to the right and see if you get the pop that you are looking for.
    Hope that helps.

  5. once you convert it to B&W try messing with the exposure highlights and shadows to help make the subject POP

  9. I have some B&W actions that I love, but the key is messing with the levels and curves which really get them to POP! Up the contrast, do a soft light adjustment...it will perk them right up. (But I think yours are beautiful all the same). :-)

  10. I actually really like your black and whites! And your composition on all them is so much fun...I tend to go hi-key b&w and I think if you added a curves adjustment and switched it to lighten it would add just a little...love your too though. I don't know that there is a wrong black and white.

  15. Well girl...I think everyone is in agreement with you that you have the cutest kids. :) You didn't get much help with the b/w issue, but the help you did get was pretty much the same from the ones that offered it. I don't like how my b/w turn out either which is why I don't usually do b/w. I may have to try some of this advice.

  18. Oh, how sweet! I love that second shot of your son smiling. It looks great in color but I think I prefer the black and white shot.
