That's Odd. - Day 10 & Exercise 2

31 Days

Today marks the beginning of the posts on composition and what it takes to achieve good composition.
While I am all for breaking the rules, first you have to know the rules before you can successfully break them.

One of the most basic rules that applies to almost everything...from photography to floral arrangements to the Rule of Odds, which states that an odd number of items/focal points are more visually appealing than an even number.

Here are a few examples:
{because it also applies to blog posts!}
Three Blueberries - 11x14 Fine Art Food Photography Print - Fresh Kitchen Home Decor Photo for a Foodie

Flowering Allium - 11x14 Fine Art Flower Photography Print - Purple Fuchsia Garden Blooms Ornamental Onion Plant Home Decor Photo

Under the Ferris Wheel - 16x20 Fine Art Carnival Photography Print - Retro Inspired Midway Home Decor Photo in Smokey Blue and Burnt Orange

Take a photograph with two or four items. Now also take a photograph of one, three, or five items.
Post them to your blog or flickr account and tell us which do you like best and why.

You have through October 24th to link up!

Please include this button with your post so others can participate too!

  1. Thanks for sharing this. I shared this with some friends a few weeks ago who asked for some advice and they looked at me like I had two heads.

  2. Oh great idea. Thank you. I never thought of that.

  3. Just linked up ... I couldnt get the link on the picture to work .. but i did place a link to your blog in the post itself :) I am loving the posts! Looking forward to practice some color and pattern ones :) hehe

  4. Now why did I not know this??? I have a serious problem...I have an even number of children. HA!!! Guess maybe I need one more!!!! Can you hear me laughing?? And to top it off, I just did a post on my blog and it has four pictures. Geez. I have too much to learn. :) Thanks for this tip!

  5. Alright girlie, got my evens and odds up. They sure were fun to do. And I missed your blog comment the first time. I need to go back and count my pics I shared... Haha.

Anyway, I've never heard of the rule of odds before, but I sure like it! :) think I've noticed it before, but just didn't know what I was noticing!

Thank you for your visit and comment! I read and value each and every one. I am no longer able to keep up with returning comments on blogs, but please know that your visit and comment is greatly appreciated!
